ABOUT THE MASONRY FORK
The masonry fork—also known as a U-head or forkhead—is a heavy-duty attachment designed to fit onto a standard adjustable steel prop.
Its U-shaped head holds a suitable timber or steel cross beam in position, helping distribute a supported load across a wider area or multiple props. It can be used in temporary support arrangements for floors, ceilings, formwork and structural alterations.
Masonry forks must always be installed as part of a properly assessed temporary-works system. The props must remain vertical and be positioned on firm, load-bearing surfaces with suitable sole boards and bracing where required.
FAQs
Is an adjustable prop included?
No. The masonry fork is supplied as an attachment only. Suitable adjustable props, sole boards and supporting beams can be added to your hire.
What does a masonry fork do?
It sits on top of an adjustable prop and holds a timber or steel beam in position. This allows a load to be distributed across a wider area or across several props.
How much weight can it support?
The attachment has a stated safe working load of up to 4,000 kg under specified conditions. However, the safe load of the complete system is determined by its lowest-rated component and the temporary-works design.
Does the prop height affect its capacity?
Yes. An adjustable prop’s safe capacity generally reduces as it is extended. The masonry fork’s height must also be included when calculating the overall support height.
Can it hold timber and steel beams?
Yes, provided the beam fits correctly within the fork and is suitable for the calculated load and span. The beam must be selected by a competent person.
Can it be used to support a load-bearing structure?
Potentially, but the entire temporary support arrangement must be professionally assessed. Structural or temporary-works engineering advice should be obtained for load-bearing applications.
NEED HELP CHOOSING?
Our team is here to help you find the right machine for your project.
Can I use it without bracing the props?
Not unless the temporary-works design confirms this is safe. Props may require lacing or bracing to prevent sideways movement and maintain vertical alignment.
What should the props stand on?
Props must stand on firm, level surfaces capable of supporting the imposed load. Suitable sole boards should normally be used to distribute the load.
Can it be used with any adjustable prop?
It is designed for compatible standard masonry or adjustable steel props. Compatibility should be confirmed before installation, and improvised connections must never be used.
Can you design the temporary support arrangement?
Build Compound supplies the hire equipment but does not provide structural or temporary-works design. A competent person or qualified engineer should specify the arrangement where required.
Can you deliver the equipment to site?
Yes. Build Compound provides local delivery across Yorkshire, subject to location and availability.
What should I do if the attachment is bent or damaged?
Do not use it. Isolate the item and contact Build Compound immediately. Hired attachments must not be straightened, welded, modified or repaired by the hirer.
