ABOUT THE STRONGBOY
The Strongboy is a heavy-duty masonry support head designed to fit onto a standard Acrow prop. Its steel blade is inserted into a prepared mortar joint or brick opening, allowing masonry above to be temporarily supported while work takes place below.
It is commonly used when installing lintels or steel beams, creating new door and window openings, and completing structural alterations.
The retaining-bar design helps keep the Strongboy securely positioned on the Acrow prop and transfers the masonry load vertically through the prop to a suitable supporting base.
FAQs
Is an Acrow prop included?
No. The Strongboy is the support head only. A suitable Acrow prop and sole board will also be required and can be added to your hire.
How much weight can one Strongboy support?
Each Strongboy has a maximum safe working load of 340 kg when correctly installed. The required number and positioning must be determined by a competent person or structural engineer.
How far apart should Strongboys be positioned?
They must never be positioned more than 900 mm apart. Closer spacing may be required depending on the wall, loading and temporary works design. The manufacturer recommends 750 mm spacing as a general preference.
What wall thickness can it support?
The standard Strongboy is intended for solid or single-leaf walls up to approximately 225 mm thick. A different support system may be required for wider or more complex cavity walls.
Can I use it for a load-bearing wall?
Potentially, but the temporary support arrangement must be properly assessed and designed. Structural engineering advice should be obtained before altering a load-bearing wall.
Can it be used with any prop?
It is designed for use with standard telescopic Acrow props featuring an appropriate 150 × 150 mm head plate. It must not be fitted to unsuitable struts or improvised supports.
NEED HELP CHOOSING?
Our team is here to help you find the right machine for your project.
What surface should the prop stand on?
The prop must be positioned vertically on firm, level ground capable of carrying the load. A suitable sole board should normally be installed beneath it to distribute the load.
Can I use a Strongboy without professional advice?
Temporary structural support is safety-critical. A competent person should identify the loads, support positions and required equipment. If there is any doubt, consult a qualified structural engineer.
Can you deliver the equipment to site?
Yes. Build Compound provides local delivery across Yorkshire, subject to location and availability.
What happens if the Strongboy becomes bent or damaged?
Do not use it. Set the item aside and contact Build Compound immediately. Strongboys must not be modified, straightened or repaired by the hirer.
